My Project

As the librarian in a Title I school, I am always seeking exciting activities that will increase curiosity and create lifelong learners. Many of my students have expressed an interest in fashion design, drawing their own comic book characters and costumes whenever they have the opportunity. They come alive as they are allowed to pursue their passions in the school environment.

It is that enthusiasm that I want to capture as we create real-life costumes for historical figures, picture book characters, or comic book villains.

These fashion designer kits are designed so that young students and students with disabilities are also able to create full outfits without the need to sew, while our older students may begin to explore making and creating in a deeper way. This fusion of their passions and the text that we read will propel them to think deeply as they analyze character traits and research fashion from various eras.

As a former theater kid myself, I know how important it is to have things that you care about to connect you to school. Our school has a high rate of chronic absenteeism, but projects like these help connect kids to school as they understand its meaning and purpose in their lives. It may seem like a small thing, but these small things add up to bright futures for each and every one of our students.
