Fantasy Book Clubs for 8th Graders Ready for Some Magic!

My Students

My students live in an area of Seattle that is one of the most culturally and economically diverse in the country, and many of them are English Language Learners.

My students are 8th graders, and officially all three of their middle school years have been impacted by COVID- they are hopeful about this school year ending on a positive notes.

My Project

My 8th graders are starting the last half of their last year of middle school. In this upcoming unit, students will get to choose a fantasy novel to read and analyze throughout the unit. They will look at common archetypes and tropes, think about theme, and practice academic group discussions with each other. In addition to analyzing the novel they pick, they will also use their books to inspire their own fantasy writing.

In the midst of the pandemic, they are ready to read and be reflected in books that that focus on themes of magic, heroes, and triumph.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
