Family Style: Exploring Autobiography Through Art and Creativity

My Project

In the words of photographer Susanne K. Langer, "Art is the objectification of human feeling." My seventh and eighth grade artists embody this definition, embracing any and all opportunities for self expression - both inside and outside the art room. They are creative and self-reflective, open and enthusiastic about exploring all new mediums and styles. My students' artwork often depicts their own life experiences, reflecting the cultural diversity of our school community as we are uniquely positioned in the heart of East San Jose and Little Saigon.

Family Style by Thien Pham is a graphic novel rooted in immigration, food, and culture in our San Jose community - this novel is a perfect way for my students to begin exploring the creation of their own autobiographical comics.

Reading through an individual copy of Family Style, my students will consider the artist's stylistic choices, both visual and in narrative format. This graphic novel is an opportunity for my students to not only see their community represented in print, but also to learn that every immigrant, every first or second generation student, every individual has a unique story that is worth sharing. After completing our graphic novel unit, each student will take home their personal copy of Family Style as a reminder that the stories of East San Jose - their stories - are powerful and always deserve to be shared.
