This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Currently, my classroom has 24 old cubby desks that are falling apart and disgusting on the inside of the cubbies due to decades of grime; they are of different varieties and don't mesh together very well for group work, nor are they conducive to a good learning environment due to their age, wear, and tear. Hence, receiving 6 brand new round tables will transform the classroom to look like new. I will be doing this project in stages to make each project cheaper and easier to fund in order to get the tables faster. Thanks to 13 donors and this site, I have already funded two tables, and this project will fund table #3. Almost halfway there!
My goals for the project are to foster group discussions by being able to drop a primary source, editorial cartoon, or other historical item on each table to allow my students to discuss and share ideas.
In addition, round tables will be useful for games and other activities with a competitive element, so that each table can compete with the others.
My high school students tend to have a lot going on at home or in their private lives; I have striven for years to make my classroom a warm and comforting space. I know that I hate working in a bland or messy environment, and many of my students are the same. Replacing my old desks is the last step to making sure my classroom is never an obstacle to student achievement.
