My Students

The American Author, Garrison Keillor said, "A book is a gift you can open again and again." DK Eyewitness Books easily fulfill that as each book will give my middle school students hours of information to read, learn and enjoy.

My students are pre-teens who, if they like reading, typically come into my class enjoying Fiction.

Many try their best to stay clear of the Non-Fiction area when we visit our school library. The draw of informational text subsides once they reach middle school, especially for girls. These digital natives are used to the bells and whistles that technology provides on a daily basis. For this reason, they need informational text that contains photographs, captions, charts, maps and more! My students love CHOICE during their daily Independent Reading and DK Eyewitness books would expand their informational text selections. Additionally, our school is a low-income, Title 1 school where the free or reduced lunch rate is higher than 85%. Our building has struggled meeting adequate yearly progress for the last several years on the state assessment, given in May of each year.

My Project

Students may use the DK Eyewitness Books to delve further into a topic studied within a content area class. Topics such as Ancient China and Ancient Egypt are covered in the 6th grade Social Studies curriculum. Imagine the power I can give my students when they have the opportunity to read about a subject or topic that interests them! Students could use these materials during Independent Reading to do just that. Students read more when they have CHOICE and VOICE in their reading materials. I don't expect my students to enjoy every book, but I expect them to know what subjects/topics interest them. These materials will provide a variety of informational text within our classroom library to help my students with the daunting task of choosing their next great read! My students will blog about their reading and the information they have learned. Students can pose questions to classmates' posts, reading and learning from each other, building our classroom community.

Common Core State Standards has put this area at the fore-front of instruction, regardless if students are drawn to it. Students may choose to visit the local library in the future looking specifically for other DK Eyewitness books. Students may CHOOSE to read more on a subject simply because they found that topic interesting after using these materials.
