My Students

Just like opening presents on Christmas day, my students were full of "oohs" and "aaaahs" when I brought in my personal EyeClops microscope. Everyone wanted a chance to experiment with the device. Of all my lessons, it was the one that excited them the most.

The school is an urban elementary school, with a student population that is predominantly African-American.

It services grades K-5. Many of these students had no concept of the power of a microscope until I brought my personal microscope to school. They were so fascinated by what it could do. However, there are not enough microscopes of this kind to maximize the benefits of this technology. Our school has also experienced budget cuts that do not afford us the opportunity to have these items available on-site.

My Project

My students need 4 handheld digital microscopes which they can use to explore plant life at a level that most of my students have no idea exists. Fourth and fifth graders will collect samples from nature - flowers, trees, seeds, insects, etc.. as we study pollination in the spring. They will document their observations in a mini-science journal. I hope that this activity will inspire some of our students to (1) begin to think about what's "below the surface" of things, and more importantly (2) develop an inquisitive nature about life.

There has always been an indisputable lack of African-Americans in science and librarianship.

As a librarian, I think this is a wonderful way to bring light and life (pun intended) to the possibilities of science and the value of investigative research.
