This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are kind, friendly, creative, and love making music. They are mostly low-income households. Many of my students have come here from another country but have not traveled far outside of our little town.

Students have done well with distance learning.

Some of them used a device from school and some of them already had something they could use. The challenge that we had was varied internet access. There were other students who chose to do the distance learning through the paper packets I provided.

The recorders are a great instrument to teach at a distance. They do not have to have internet access to be successful. It is important that each student have their own instrument to use at home. I am very excited to still be able to teach recorder regardless of where my students and I work together.

My Project

Each student will receive their own Soprano Recorder. I will teach them how to play the instrument online and through paper packets. The students will learn to read music and play music by learning to play the recorder.

I will utilize different tools such as FlipGrid so students can record their progress.

I have developed a program in which the songs the students learn are scaffolded. They can move along at their own pace once the basics are mastered. I will provide weekly lessons and check-ins.

Students also learn fluency in reading, self-control, and confidence when learning a musical instrument. Having a recorder of their own to use keeps them safe from COVID 19.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
