My Students

"In middle school, if students don't write it down, it never happened." My students love writing on the white board. Despite feeling uncomfortable with math and performing in front of their peers, they enjoy working the math problems out on the board.

Some stats about our school are 84% of our students receive free and/or reduced lunch.

We have 80% African American; 14% White; 6% Hispanic. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math students. They are at a variety of learning levels. One thing they all seem to enjoy is art/drawing. They struggle with note-taking and working problems out on paper. But when I tell them they can write on the white board, they all jump at once. They enjoy choosing what color marker they will use and also enjoy decorating their finished answer.

My Project

I have a large white board along one whole side of my classroom. I have divided it into 6-8 columns/sections. Each section is numbered. My classes are small enough that each student gets their own section or 2 students work together. They copy problems from their math book or from what I have written on the board. They pick the color marker of their choice (they all have favorites) and then work out the problems. Once they understand the math concept/algorithm, they love the challenge of being timed or seeing who can do it the fastest. The practice helps reinforce the concepts along with getting them ready for the state test in the spring, which is timed.

After being in school for only a couple of months, the students have quickly gone through the supply of 20 markers we started with.

I only have 2 erasers so they have to wait on each other to erase their work. Erasing the markers doesn't always get everything off the board, and the board need a good cleaning at least twice a week. The students are constantly asking me: when I am going to get more supplies?
