I'm excited to report that in just this short time, three school jobs resulted from having a dedicated cart. These jobs teach skills, support sensory needs, and bring happiness to our students by building on their interests!\r\n\r\nImmediately we started making ice deliveries around the school. I have a student so eager to walk because it fills a sensory need. This gave him purpose and a plan to walk all over the campus. He practices following simple directions, locating room numbers and greeting others. \r\n\r\nWe also supported our October pet supply drive by making rounds to collect pet beds, food and toys and depositing these items at a central collection location. This gave us a natural way to incorporate heavy tasks to meet sensory needs for a student and work on reading a schedule. \r\n\r\nMost recently we test ran our up and coming coffee cart business by loading coffee samples on the cart and going door to door delivering samples. We have a very social group of students interested in food service. I wondered if I should cut the cooking activity and do it another day, but I pushed forward. We had a tub full of rescued apple from the cafeteria. What happened blew me away!\r\n\r\nMy students don't eat apples. One offers a gruff 'no' and another a kind 'no thank you' when presented with the snack. No interest was shown until the chopping mats came out and the apple peelers were put on the table. I said nothing, quietly choosing to demonstrate the gadget. Next thing, everyone showed they wanted a turn by either sitting down or trying to grab an apple. Most were mesmerized by the spiral peel that piled up, the slinky-like apple slices, and the cylinder core that remained. \r\n\r\nCooperation was the best it had been all year. Students followed directions and prepared an easy snack with the leftover apples from the cafeteria. The oven mitt was a hit and great to lift the hot lid off to stir the apples. Everyone wanted a turn to wear it, too! The coolest part was the ripple effect that resulted when this project brought a couple cool kitchen gadgets and tools to help us limit food waste. I can't wait to see their excitement when we do similar cooking activities with our garden produce!","fullyFundedDate":1760377795439,"projectUrl":"project/a-peel-ing-tools-for-cooking-from-the-ga/9685019/","projectTitle":"a-PEEL-ing Tools for Cooking from the Garden","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Clair","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp384359_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720486964184","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/katie-clair"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7704","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":423,"numTeachers":47,"percentFrplEligible":60,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":29,"percentWhite":50,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"9.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":55.5,"schoolId":7704,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about C.E.
