Exploring the Roots of Cinema

My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners who are enrolled in an elective film studies/production course. They are so excited to tell their stories through the medium of film!

My classes include students with learning disabilities, academically gifted students, and all ranges in between.

My classes include students who are immigrants and English language learners. My classes include students who are on free or reduced-price lunch. Each student is different from the others, but they all share a love for film and creativity!

My Project

My students are taking an elective film course, and one of our favorite units is film history. Students learn all about the scientist and artists who shaped the early history of film.

These materials will allow students to explore the roots of photography and motion pictures!

They will use sun print paper and pinhole cameras to discover how we can use light to create images. Students will explore persistence of vision by making zoetropes and thaumatropes and using the sticky notes to create flip books.

Giving students a firm understanding of the beginnings of motion pictures and exploring all of the scientific, artistic, and technological developments needed to get film to where it is today will help them guide their own film making and encourage appreciation of the process. Help me help students feel more connected with the history of film!
