Help me give my students iPads for their speech therapy. They can engage in reading using digital stories and browse websites for resources and images to build background knowledge.
My students attend speech therapy to support their learning because they have difficulties keeping up with classwork, conveying what they comprehend and working independently. In speech therapy, I target skills to help them better express their thoughts and ideas.
My students love stories read aloud and I see moments of clarity and understanding when they are engaged with the characters, events and pictures in the stories.
They have a basic understanding of stories and can answer most questions. However, to be more involved in the reading process, they need to build on critical thinking skills, such as cause-effect, finding the connections between events and making inferences. They light up when they see how the characters and events in the stories interact with each other.
My Project
I am requesting two iPads for my students so they can use digital medium for stories, work on digital worksheets and use educational apps. For reading, it will be a useful tool to develop their background knowledge and information on topics they are learning in school.
My students are better engaged through interactive reading on iPads, which gives immediate responses and connections, prompts, and the ability to search for clues.
This will facilitate and enhance their reading experience. Using therapeutic and educational apps, students can take turns to work independently while others get direct support. Activities can be downloaded and their responses can be saved, helping to track their performance and monitor progress.
