My students receive speech/language therapy to address areas that affect comprehension and expression of ideas. They can be isolated in the areas of speech, language and communication or in combination. These delays affect their reading abilities; understanding directions and new materials; expressing their ideas verbally or in writing. They have difficulties in keeping up in the classroom and learning from the academic instruction. My students need to be engaged in their learning and be empowered by strategies that help them comprehend and communicate their ideas. In addition to their delays, my students are from low-income families who may have limited resources outside of the school setting. They are also English Language Learners who speak other languages with their families. In speech therapy, I target skills to help them become better readers and become more aware, so they can express their thoughts and ideas.
