Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of thirteen (13) special needs boys and girls ages five to eight (Kindergarten to second grade). The class consist of 60% Hispanic and 40% other (African American, Asian, Caucasian, etc). Of the 60%, one-third of the parents are limited and do not speak English at home. The average household is below poverty level and unable to contribute to the extra needs of the classroom.
My students with autism learn in a variety of ways.
They stand, sit, sing, rock, walk, wiggle and love to dress up. Dinosaurs, planets, ponies community helpers and robots are some the things I incorporate in class due to their avid interests. I am continuing to learn the needs of my students and strive to create a learning environment that is conducive to their learning needs.
My classroom has a child's kitchen, a reading nook, magnet board with letters and several other areas that encourage exploration and learning. Role playing is very important in the learning process and it teaches them much needed social skills. It is my ongoing goal to enrich my students' lives so that they may be able to be learn, grow and expand their world.
My Project
The use of active/role play is very important in my classroom as it teaches my students to use their communication and social skills and reinforces lessons. My students learn about our community and those who help us in our community. We explore the world and learn about animals and their habitats. Life skills, such communication and social skills, are practiced in free play as pirates and princesses. During all active role playing they learn to share and take turns.
The items in this project will allow them to role play community helpers, paleontologists and safari guides, use their imagination and communication/social skills and pirates and princesses.
By being active in their learning, my students will be able to practice what they learn and retain the information for their future.
