Exploring Ground Zero-Part 1

Help me give my students the gift of reading together! As we wrap up the school year, we will end with this powerful historical fiction novel, bringing history to life and fostering meaningful discussions.

My Project

I would love to add a historical fiction novel to our classroom novel study collection. This genre isn’t explored as much in 7th grade, and I am looking to change that!

Reading Ground Zero by Alan Gratz with my 7th graders would have a meaningful impact on their understanding of history, empathy, and resilience.

Gratz is a popular author among middle school students, and I know this book will not disappoint them! It provides an engaging way to learn about the events of 9/11 through the perspectives of young characters. Additionally, the book challenges stereotypes and fosters a deeper understanding of people from different backgrounds.

My goals for this unit include helping students understand 9/11 beyond just facts by connecting them emotionally to the stories of those affected. I'd also like them to step into the shoes of different characters and consider how experiences shape viewpoints.

My students are so special because they LOVE to read! They especially enjoy reading books together as a class or in small groups, and Ground Zero by Alan Gratz would allow me to help fulfill their passions.
