Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My goal as a teacher is to inspire my students to be life long learners. I want them to see all the opportunities they can pursue in a fulfilling career in the arts. My students love to create things and I would love to focus that passion towards furthering their education.
For my art classes I was told that I have unlimited pencils, copy paper, and $50.
My kids are worth way more than that. They have a passion to be expressive individuals and I would like to encourage this.
My role as a teacher is to educate my students, but I have been amazed about how much they have taught me. This is my second year teaching art at an inner city public elementary school and I learning new things about this community on a daily basis. Despite most of them coming from economic poverty I am refreshed by the happiness and joy that they have. Our school has 666 students (an unfortunate number I know) and an 88% low income level. Despite these hurdles, I want to give them the best education. My only hindrance is a low budget.
My Project
I am asking for the art supplies I will need this year. We need paper, paint, colored pencils, sharpies, and markers. The first necessity for art is paper. I am asking for a lower weight paper for drawing and a heavier weight for painting. I want my students to study the masters of color such as Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh, and experiment and discover how they can express emotions with the use of colors. I want to share with them different art movements that will allow them to use their imaginations like Cubism and Surrealism. I believe art unifies people by illustrating that we are all alike. We all have a voice and a right to express our thoughts and feelings.
I believe the arts serve as the great commonality for all of mankind and always has reflected who we are as people.
Art will show my students that despite their circumstantial surroundings they have a voice. They will see how as people we are more alike than we are different. The journey through art of self identity and expression is the most important lesson they could possibly learn.
