Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For my art classes I was told that I have unlimited pencils, copy paper, and $50. My kids are worth way more than that. They have a passion to be expressive individuals and I would like to encourage this.
My role as a teacher is to educate my students, but I have been amazed about how much they have taught me.
This is my second year teaching art at an inner city public elementary school and I learning new things about this community on a daily basis. Despite most of them coming from economic poverty I am refreshed by the happiness and joy that they have. Our school has 540 students and an 88% low income level. Despite these hurdles, I want to give them the best education. My only hindrance is a low budget.
My Project
I am asking for the art supplies I will need this year. We need a lot of paper, paint, paint pumps, pastels, colored pencils, erasers, sharpies, and a glue pump. The first necessity for art is paper. I am asking for a lower weight paper for drawing and a heavier weight for painting. I want my students to study the masters of color such as Monet, Renoir, and Van Gough. I want them to experiment and discover how they can express emotions with the use of colors. I want to share with them different art movements that will allow them to use their imaginations like Cubism and Surrealism. I was given several gallons of glue, but no effective way to fill the my glue bottles. I am asking for a glue pump. I would love to introduce my students to the collage techniques of the greats like Romare Bearden and Jane Frank. I beleive art unifies people by illustrating that we are all alike. We all have a voice and a right to express our thoughts and feelings.
I think the arts serve as the great comminallity for all of mankind.
It has always reflected who we are as people. I believe that art will show my students that despite their circumstantial surroundings they have a voice. They will see how as people we are more alike than we are different. I believe that the journey of self idenity and expression is the most important lesson they could possibilly learn.
