My Project

In my classroom, I am privileged to work with students from all walks of life, of every gender identify, ethnicity, cultural background, religion, orientation and ability. One particular group of students that I tend to work with the most are neurodivergent - students with autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and other learning disabilities. These students are brilliant, creative and hardworking, but often have to find alternative ways to learn, especially when dealing with difficulties in focus and sensory input/modulation. As a neurodivergent person myself, I remember how difficult staying focused and on-task in the classroom was. One of the promises I made myself when I became a teacher was that I would work to find ways and resources that I could implement in my classroom to ensure that my students didn't have to experience the same hardships and struggles that I did in school.

Tools that add in sensory input and modulation allow neurodivergent students to strive in the classroom.

Simple tools, such as alternative seating, wiggle seats, chair bands, sensory and fidget toys allows all students to explore the curriculum in ways that are comfortable and effective to their specific needs. Since I began implementing these tools in my classroom in 2022, I have seen a huge increase in focus, meaningful participation and work completion, and a significant decrease in disruptive behaviors, many of which were the result of unmet sensory needs. These benefits have not been exclusive to my neurodivergent students - my neurotypical students have LOVED having access to these tools and being able to use them in the classroom as well! However, I'm limited on what I have the means to purchase for my classroom, and I aim to expand and diversify the offerings that I have available for all of my students through this project.
