Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These days it is so hard to get high school kids interesting in anything other than Facebook, Twitter, or texting. It is a constant battle in the classroom to keep all of the kids engaged in activities that promote learning.

My students and I were so "eggcited" to hear about ABC Family's offer to help the DonorsChoose program!

Our school is a great HS with a diverse population. Over 65% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Like most teenagers, many of my students would rather be hanging out with their friends or browsing Twitter for the latest drama. But they are really good kids who for the most part want to do well. Many of them don't have the most stable home life and school is where they can come to feel safe and a sense of security. The kids in my classes are fun, nice, friendly, smart and funny. I try to keep them interested with fun lessons but it is hard to compete with their electronic devices! Overall, I love my job and I love my students and each year we work together to have fun learning Spanish!

My Project

"Eggspert" is a fabulous game that requires 100% participation of the students. With "Eggspert," we will be able to review vocabulary and grammar in a way that is fun and "eggciting"! It is such a good tool to practice for a test or a final exam. My classroom has ten rows and with the extra "eggs," each row can have their own! One student at a time is the designated question asker. He/She asks a question relating to the vocabulary or grammar skill and the kids race to answer it by pushing their egg. There is no confusion as to who knew the answer first because the game tells who pushed the button first. From a teacher's standpoint, it is amazing to stand back and watch a group of 38 teenagers rooting for each other and working together to learn. From the kid's perspective, they enjoy a different sort of activity and have fun while doing it.

Having an "Eggspert" for our Spanish department will be so beneficial for our students for years to come!

Foreign language is a class where it is so important that the kids feel safe and at home. Playing games like "Eggspert" really gives the kids a chance to get to know each other and feel more comfortable. Additionally, it is such a great tool to review vocabulary words and grammatical skills! Imagine conjugating verbs as a competitive sport! I can't think of anything more fun!
