Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Last Spring we hatched and raised chicks, and now those chicks have grown into beautiful hens! And those hens are laying us eggs! This is a great success in our Agriculture curriculum, and we are hoping to expand the size of the coop to hatch and raise more hens this Spring.

Hatching chickens is not only a valuable learning experience, but the act of learning where your food comes from, and having a relationship with the plants and animals that provide us with resources is also a very rewarding experience.

My Environmental Science program has been providing my students with both scientific knowledge and career-shaping experiences since I came to Etiwanda in 2017. Expanding the available coop space will only optimize that out-of-the-classroom learning time into more formative experiences that will shape everyone's future. With a larger coop and more chickens, my students can start our student-run farm stand, where we can sell the eggs and other Etiwanda Farm products (like veggies, herbs and honey!) to community members.
