My Students

My high school students are some of the most caring and hard working people I have ever met, despite the fact that they have elementary reading levels. Increasingly, new research is showing that the best predictor for future success is reading ability, or reading engagement.

In order to improve literacy skills for all my students, they need books to read- that they want to read!

However, our school serves a student population where there is 100% qualification for free and reduced lunch, and oftentimes the students put finding books on the back burner.

Having access to a full classroom library of all genres and reading levels would increase my students' reading levels and success for their future!

My Project

Literacy is critical to the development of an individual and a community as a whole. Oftentimes we forget how much we take advantage of being able to read and write effectively. There are so many reasons why we should keep literacy on the forefront of our thoughts.

A literate community is a happy and diverse community.

If my students are exposed to a greater variety of literature we would be able to engage in a more rigorous dialogue. The sharing of ideas and perspectives, which we often learn from literature, leads to greater levels of mutual understanding, caring, and a stronger community.
