My Students

Being a new Kindergarten class that was created after the school year had begun, my students do not have many activities to do while in literacy centers. Since there are not many activities, my students have a very hard time remaining engaged and keeping busy while I work with small reading groups.

My class is in a public school in the state of Maryland.

Even though the school is no longer a Title I school, it is still made up of low income families. My class consists of a very diverse group of 17 students. Besides being diverse in ethnics and races, my students learning is very differentiated. I have some students who are currently on a second grade reading level, as well as some students who are still learning to identify letters and their corresponding sounds. A majority of my students need a lot of practice listening for all of the sounds in words in order to write words.

My Project

My students need engaging literacy center activities, such as Sight Words Learning Center, Tub O'Letters and upper and lower case rubber letter stamps, to help them practice sounding out and writing words in various ways by using stamps, letter cards, or picture cards. By obtaining the resources that I am requesting, my students will be able to be engaged as well as practice specific skills while at literacy centers. Having literacy centers which allow students to stretch out words in order to listen for all of the sounds will help them with their writing and reading. Many of my students can read a sight word but will have difficulty writing it as well. The Sight-words Instant Learning Center will help students practice spelling out and writing sight words in various ways. For my lower level students, they can use the Picture-Word Match and Sort and Slide Word Building Activity to practice listening for and writing all of the sounds in 3 letter words. The Tub O' Letters Practice Cards has differentiated activities to meet the needs of all of my students. All of the resources I am requesting will allow students to practice sounding out words which will help with their writing and reading.

By obtaining resources from this project, my students will have better literacy centers to help meet the needs of all of my students.

The materials will help improve the students reading and writing skills by practicing sounding out words. Also, if my students that are at literacy centers are engaged, I will be able to provide more assistance to the students I am working with in small reading groups. Overall all of my students will benefit from receiving the resources from this project!
