Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Movement, balance, and large muscle development are important kindergarten skills. We need to get the students throwing, bouncing, hopping, skipping and jumping. These skills will also develop self confidence and the desire to keep active, which is also a step forward in combating obesity in young children.

My school is located in the San Fernando Valley of southern California in a low-income neighborhood.

We are Title I and have a free lunch program. My classroom consists of 25 adorable five and six year old students who are motivated, hard-working and eager to learn. Most live in apartment buildings on busy streets and have few, if any, opportunities to play outside with friends after school.

My Project

Physical education is a required standard for kindergarten as is reading and math. Our school has limited materials for P.E. I would like to begin a program with my students that would teach different skills, such as; kicking, hitting, throwing, galloping, skipping- among others- while developing large muscle coordination, self confidence, and to motivate them to be more physically active.

Too often students are reluctant to play at recess or just don't try because they haven't acquired the skills needed to participate.

They feel embarrassed and lack confidence. I want all my students to have the opportunity to learn how to jump rope, play catch, and hula hoop. Just imagine what these simple skills would do for a child's self confidence! I want my students to feel like winners in the classroom AND on the playground! Help us get off the bench and move!
