This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our kids are great! Everyday our work is paying great dividends and they are making intellectual gains. The problem is that we never have enough interesting books for them! We don't have a school library and we really need more books to keep our students on the path to success!

We are located in the South Bronx which is ground-zero for childhood poverty.

Our students' and their families cannot afford to buy books even in great economic times. In these recessionary times, things are much worse and our school budget has been cut for seven consecutive years. Our good books are in short supply. This is why I have written this grant to you. We desperately need your help to get these great books and help our amazing students progress to higher reading levels. We use the Reader's Workshop model from Columbia Teacher's College. What that means is that each student is expected to read a book at his or her reading level. To accomplish this task we must at all times have a multitude of interesting books at a variety of reading levels. The books I have carefully chosen for this grant would help our classroom library to meet these goals. These books would immediately day one that we receive them be used by students to improve their reading comprehension.

My Project

We teach strategies for how to think deeper about a text you are reading. These strategies are profoundly effective if the book is right for you. These books will be right for many of our kids. They will be utilized from the day they are received at our school for an hour a day of independent reading. Many students will also read the books every night at home for multiple hours. Our students have been begging me to get them interesting on-level books to read. The books I have selected for this grant involve adolescent vampires! Vampires are always an extremely popular mythical idea in our Western culture and combine that with the trials and tribulations of having to deal with being a teenager and you have a winning combination for keeping young readers deeply engaged! Students will go crazy over these books and will read them repeatedly. Students have begged me repeatedly to find them vampire themed novels and will be overjoyed to get their hands, minds, and hearts on these books!

Please help us provide our students with the powerful ideas in these inspiring books!

I have bought numerous books on my own but a teacher's salary doesn't give enough room for the kind of philanthropy that our kids desperately need. Please help us by providing these essential resources for our wonderful students! We thank your for your continuing support for our cause. The betterment of our students is the betterment of our world. Thank you and god bless!
