My students need this exciting, real life experience book, Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, to read in my ELA 8th grade class.

My Students

Do you recall the first time you read a book and couldn't wait for the next chapter to begin or felt the loss of a new best friend at the end. This is how my students have reacted to Sherman Alexei's award-winning book. The book brings issues that students face about identity, poverty, and race into focus, as well as show hope.

My students are all non-Caucasian, mostly second language learners living in poverty.

70% of my students qualify for free lunches. Our school-wide goals are focused on college-bound literacy for all, though most learners are scoring way below grade-level on state exams. Literacy is the thing that will allow my students to perform better and possibly get through high school and college. Therefore, reading engaging, entertaining, and profound real stories is a must.

My Project

The award-winning novel, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian," is a semi-autobiographical story of a young Indian boy, severely sick at birth, growing up on a reservation in Washington state with abuse, poverty, alcoholism and racism all about. This story hits a chord and resonates strongly with my students because they are also living in abject poverty, with it's persistent violence, substance abuse and racism. My students need this book to help them see hope in their own lives.

This is a story that can save lives in the hood.

It gives what every child living with "less than" needs and that is hope. It is a story that can engage readers, some of whom have never read through an entire book before. It is also a story that entertains while providing powerful life lessons.
