My Students

Every picture tells a story, every story needs a picture, either in still or video format. My students love the new SMART Board in our class and enjoy sharing stories they have written. A Flip Video is small and easy enough for second graders to use so their stories can be shown on the big screen.

My students are from all over the world.

Over half my class was born in a country other than the USA. Many are just learning English for the first time this year. This diversity is represented throughout our school. They enjoy telling the stories of their own country, as well as learning about America. Some of the students in the class and school are from affluent families, however some are from quite financially disadvantaged families. The gap between these groups can be narrowed through school experiences where all students are given resources and opportunities that are equitable. My school is the smallest in our district, and it is the oldest, opened in 1953, so our facilities have not kept the pace of the newer elementary schools.

My Project

Having access to a Flip Video will enable my students to document school and classroom events, and will motivate them to write about the event. It can also be used as a still camera and be plugged directly into the computer without extra wires. When plugged into the laptop computer, videos can be shown on the SMART Board. How exciting it will be to be shown on a big screen, or to have their stories to viewed on the big screen. They will learn how important it is to plan a story or script, do it in a logical order, express themselves clearly enough so the audience will understand what is going on, and to use photographs or video clips that match the text. Additionally, students will be able to have authentic audiences to appreciate and value their work, including classmates, other classes, and their families. All students will have equal access to this equipment regardless of their family's financial status.

This project will give all students an opportunity to shine.

Despite the gap in financial status, each child is a citizen of the digital age and has an innate curiosity and ability that would only be honed with access to a "Flip". For most, it will be their first experience with this type of technology. It may inspire those who do not normally enjoy writing to write, and those who are unsure of themselves to have a format for expression. A "Flip" will give a voice to connect to the world.
