Every Mind Matters: Building Confidence Through Literature

Help me give my students a class set of Fish in a Tree so they can discover that success comes in many forms and that every learner has unique strengths to share.

My Project

My fourth-grade students are curious, hardworking learners who are beginning to discover their strengths, interests, and voices. Like many children, they sometimes compare themselves to others or become discouraged when learning feels difficult. They need opportunities to see characters who face challenges, persevere, and ultimately discover their own potential.

The class set of Fish in a Tree will allow every student to participate in a shared reading experience centered on empathy, perseverance, and self-confidence.

Through the story of Ally, a bright student who struggles with dyslexia, my students will explore the idea that intelligence comes in many forms and that challenges do not define a person's future. This novel encourages students to celebrate differences, recognize their own strengths, and support one another as learners.

As we read together, students will strengthen reading comprehension, writing, discussion, and critical-thinking skills while engaging in meaningful conversations about resilience and belonging. Having a copy of the novel in every student's hands ensures equal access to learning and allows us to dive deeply into close reading, evidence-based discussions, and thoughtful written responses.

My goal is to create a classroom where every child feels valued, capable, and inspired to grow. Through Fish in a Tree, students will learn that great minds do not all think alike—and that their unique ways of learning can become their greatest strengths.
