Help me give my students the following resources to help them identify and process their own emotions and the emotions of their friends in the classroom and school community.
I teach a wonderful group of students in eastern North Carolina. I serve students kindergarten through 5th grade, and all range in age from 6 to 10 years old. My students do qualify for special education services and have a variety of needs that focus on functional and academic supports. In our classroom, I (along with two wonderful teacher assistants) teach communication through pictures and technology, teach reading, math, science, social studies, help with processing emotions, and even how to play though individual and small group instruction.
Our students love their school and love coming to school.
We teach our students through differentiated instruction. Reading, for example, is shared with our students everyday through reading in small groups or as a whole class. We use pictures to help our students understand the text, and use augmentative communication devices (like a BIGmack) so students can participate in the reading process with us. We will often read a story or book many times so our students can become familiar with the book and have lots of reading practice.
My Project
This project will help our students in many ways. We all experience many different emotions throughout the day. However, our students are not always able to identify their feelings or communicate why they are feeling that emotion. To help them navigate through what they are feeling, we use adapted communication supports and strategies, and even direct instruction using books and songs.
The purchase of these materials will help us approach this difficult topic through play and literacy.
The materials would include book titles that directly relate to my students and include play based activities such as character people and puzzle based on emotions.
