Essential Materials for Mathematical Collaboration
My students need materials that will allow them to show what they are learning to their fellow classmates, work through problems in a collaborative setting & receive instant feedback.
My classroom is a community in which all students can learn math!
Students are learning from and with their peers, gaining skills they will use in all areas of life.
Students work together in pairs or small groups, using their collaborative skills to share their ideas and thinking. They are encouraged to use the resources available to them to problem solve as they work through real-world scenarios and solve problems. Developing skills for higher levels of learning and qualities that will enable them to persevere as they continue their education.
My Project
The materials and supplies I am requesting for my students will be incorporated into their daily lessons.
Your contribution to this project will help facilitate a collaborative learning community leading to the developing higher-level thinking and understanding of mathematical concepts.
The large post-it paper, graphs and markers will be used for students to present their work and explain their thinking with their peers. For example, in one lesson students are give the first three figures in a series. They are asked to draw the next two figures on graph paper and then find the pattern in the figures. After they have found a linear and exponential relationship they work as a group to create their own pattern. Using the large post-it graph paper, students will show the figure they create. Once they draw the figure(s) they will trade problems with other groups and see if those groups can find the pattern and algebraic relationship.
The ribbon, index cards, string, straws, plates, markers, tracing paper and sticky dots will be used in lessons allowing students hands-on interaction with the skills they are learning.
The teacher stamps will be utilized to provide feedback to students as I am observing their work within their groups. As groups are working I am able to move throughout the room and observe what their answers are to problem sets. I can easily stamp group work to signify to the group they are on the right track (correct) and move on to other groups without disrupting their discussion.
