My Students

Being the library teacher I have the good fortune of teaching my students year after year from kindergarten to sixth grade. I have seen the toll the pandemic has taken on all the students socially and academically.

The students I serve come from intercity homes, low income families, and face many challenges.

The past two years have been difficult for students and teachers learning to navigate a new way of attending school. Students are adapting and putting forth effort with online and in person learning. When I see them it makes me smile and hearing how excited they are to come to library class makes my day.

My Project

Spanish speakers have little access to books in their native language at our school. There are only approximately 50 very outdated titles in the library at this time.

The availability of current Spanish books and interactive STEM materials will help make our Spanish speakers feel more connected and confident around their peers.

The goal is to have more books available for these students and different genres that they see other students checking out as well as interactive STEM materials that will build relationships.

Not only are the Spanish students dealing with the stress of the pandemic, they are also dealing with coming to a new country and not being able to communicate with their peers. This will be one way to help them feel like they fit into their class.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
