I am the ESOL teacher and we would love to add a listening center to our room - the students would benefit from being able to listen to books in both their native language and English. Also looking for a way to record them speaking so that they can see it and learn from it. I would love 4 CD players and headphones and books on tape with books in their native language as well as the English language. Thanks to you, these kids will go far in life with supports. We have 45 students who are ESOL and the majority of them are Kindergarten, as that is the each they need the most language supports. This year we have one student from ElSalvador and one from Guatemala, who both speak very little English. Last year we got 4 students who were displaced from Puerto Rico after their homes were lost in the floods. These students had to leave with very little possessions would love that they get the most exposure they can to the English language while not losing their native language literacy skills.
My Project
Exposing children, especially ESOL children, to different avenues to literacy is the key approach for their success. Many of these students do not have books at home and have never seen written Spanish or heard the books read to them. We have many new level 1 English learners who would love this for our classroom. Every day they come to us for small group so being able to offer the listening center for them would be such a great addition to our classroom. I started a Reading Buddies program this year so the older ESOL students practice their oral language skills by reading to the K and 1st grade classes. It has been very successful so having this would help develop their skills.
