Escape through Art

Help me give my students their own sketchbooks and watercolor pencils to take home and be able to escape into their artwork when not at school.

My Students

I teach art in a Title 1 High school where many students do not have access to basic art supplies. Many live with one parent or divided houses. They amaze me with how they handle the difficulties they endure in their lives and the art room is a safe place.

Time spent creating a work of art can be such a needed escape emotionally and mentally.

My students need that time away from worries and life demands and to be creative.

My Project

Many of my students do not have any art supplies at home. Being in the art room is a safe and nonjudgmental space but when students go home, that space evaporates.

We have a weekly sketchbook assignment and with their own supplies, many of these students will be able to escape in their art!

Their skills will improve and they can experiment and explore while drawing, writing and painting. This high school age is a challenging one as they try on many hats and need to discover who they are. I want to give them a vehicle to express themselves.
