Help me give my students a brain bending, high energy, out-of-the-box experience that will allow them to see math as an exciting challenge they cannot wait to master.
My students are made up of two classes, 4th and 5th graders, at a small K-8 charter in a rural community north of Phoenix. Many of my students see math as a challenge that is tough to understand and difficult to master. They typically see themselves as either having a math brain or as not being very good at math. Whether it is from past struggles, doubt in themselves, or apprehension of learning new things, many students enter my classroom expecting to fail.
It is my desire to provide high-energy, academically-rigorous learning opportunities for my students.
I enjoy seeing their eyes light up and dance as we tackle tough topics in fun ways. I want them to enter my classroom eagerly anticipating the day's lesson, not sitting at their desk wondering when the class will end.
My Project
Have you ever sat through a day of learning and dreamed of being any where other than sitting in a desk, stuck inside a classroom? Me too, and I am the teacher! There is a time and place for lectures and note taking, but they need not be the only method of teaching. Many people learn better when hands-on activities are incorporated with the subject being taught. Objects, experiences, and movement stimulate multiple areas of the brain and improve reception and retention.

Creating an Escape Room experience can help my students build their confidence through new learning experiences. As they solve puzzles that unlock new clues, students will find themselves eager to solve equations and become excited about doing math. For the first time, many of them will discover that math can be fun and may learn to love it as much as I do. With these resources, the Escape Room fun can be created throughout the year with new puzzles and new challenges. Now imagine a classroom where students cannot wait to get to class and do math!
