Laughter, tears, struggles, and triumph are all a part of my classroom. Why the tears? Well, I teach math; math is hard. Also, my students are still learning to regulate their emotions and how to act in tough situations. When they are challenged and their abilities stretched, sometimes the tears flow. And that's ok. When they don't understand a math concept, and it appears that most of their peers do, that can be overwhelming. It is hard to perceive yourself as being less capable than someone else. Students who feel inferior, are afraid to make mistakes. I strive to normalize mistakes and create a safe space for students to work through the hard parts. Teaching a student how/when to take a deep breath, dry their tears, and work through a struggle is as much a part of teaching as all of the academic lessons. Watching them persevere and tackle a challenge is the reward.
