My Students

Our students are part of an integrated program where many of our students have IEPs. We currently have 45 students on our caseload with the potential to grow throughout the year. Our classes are a mix of typically developing peers and students with disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome, and Speech Language Impairments.

Our students need multiple opportunities to practice skills they've learned with a variety of people and in a variety of settings in order for skills to generalize.

My Project

Our program is using the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS-3) to ensure that each classroom environment meets a high standard for a quality classroom. There are many components to the rating scale.

When the classroom environment meets the high standard, my students are more engaged throughout the day and have access to multiple learning opportunities.

My students are at a disadvantage from past years since they have been home due to Covid. They haven't had the experiences of being part of a group outside of their family. They do not know how to interact with peers and many don't even know how to play with a variety of toys. A bowling set and baseball mitt and ball will encourage turn taking. They need to learn how to manage their emotions when things do not go according to their plan. Books such as "Roaring Mad Riley" and "The Original Mood Flipbook" will help them recognize those emotions. "It's OK to be Different" will expose them to the diversity of the world. These materials will help them be more engaged with the world outside their homes.
