My students need a classroom set of the three texts we will be reading next semester: The Crucible, The Great Gatsby, and Fences.
Imagine sitting down at your desk to begin your daily classroom reading. There is nothing like the feeling of cracking open a book and flipping through every page, reading ahead to see what happens next. My students would like nothing more that to throw out their stapled packet and open a new book.
My student are brave strong caring juniors.
They are a large part of taking a school on the brink of closing and transforming it into a Top 500 educational institution. These students remain focused in classrooms with limited desks, lack of AC/heat, and a variety of other struggles. My students have been known to take three buses over two hours just to make it to my first period class on time. But despite all of these struggles, my students remain diligent in their desire to learn.
My classroom contains five copies of each of the texts that I have requested, The Crucible, The Great Gatsby, and Fences. Students must compete in my daily auction to receive a book for that day's lesson. My other 20 students must read from the stapled pages I have copied for them. This makes it difficult for students to read ahead if they love these stories. With a classroom set of each text, my students would be able to read at their own pace and they could use these books as sources in their essays. These books would mean the world to my students. A book of their own to hold each day could shape my classroom into a safe and challenging learning environment.
My students have never had the experience of being the first to use a classroom book.
They have been given hand-me-downs their entire educational career. Please find a way to make their love of reading as tangible as these 75 books.
