This is my 32nd year of teaching social studies to middle school students, and I have no plans to retire as I genuinely enjoy my job in every way.
I get to teach social studies every day to a wonderful and diverse group of kiddos.
My students genuinely enjoy the history aspect of social studies especially. We are located about 20 minutes south of Indianapolis and draw from a generally lower socio-economic population. It is a wonderful place to teach and live!
My Project
Our middle school is fortunate to set aside time for indoor team time during our daily schedule, and this is a fantastic opportunity for enrichment activities. STEM is an easy fit for this slot of time as students naturally approach these types of activities with great interest.
The materials in this project with allow students to engineer, measure, and build tracks & roller coasters as well as tabulate, compare, and record results.
Utilizing basic diecast cars (Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars) that nearly all students are familiar with, this project allows students to take track and roller coaster building to the next level. Students will combine mixed components (from Short Track Speedway Set, Road Course Bundle, and traditional orange track expansion sets) that they don't normally have access to (and in a large indoor area,) the sky is the limit for this engineering activity. The digital scale will allow for students to measure the weight of vehicles before and after variables are added.
