Engaging Toys for Early Learners

My Students

The students in one of the classrooms I support as a speech therapist, are working on foundational skills to share space with other people, to communicate with alternative communication devices, and to be at school. Most of these students have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. It can be very challenging for these students to have breaks from school. Throughout the last couple of years, we have had additional breaks from school and this has placed additional learning challenges on these students as they work on adjusting to the schedule changes. Our students in this class would benefit from having items that are motivating for them to learn with so they are motivated to have something to communicate for and about.

My Project

My students demonstrate regression in their communication skills during breaks from school. Due to COVID-19 we have had additional breaks from school. Having toys and items that my students find particularly motivating (and new!) my students will make quicker progress. The more students are motivated the more they attend and engage.

Coming back to school after the repeated breaks has been difficult for the students I work with, so having access to new objects that my students are interested in, such as objects with the alphabet or that play music, will help students be engaged during learning and structured times for communication and reinforcement.
