Engaging Chapter Books to Study Together

My Students

My students are full of personality and spirit. We are a low income community and the majority of these students come from less than ideal backgrounds. Despite this, my students come to school each day with smiles on their faces, ready to learn.

Because of my students' examples, they push me to not only be a better teacher, but a better person.

I try to provide a loving classroom environment where they can feel important and empowered. So that these amazing kiddos can have the support and encouragement they need to rise to their full potential.

My Project

Because of the COIVD-19 pandemic, I have noticed that it is getting harder and harder to keep my students engaged and motivated. The basal books we have in class are hard for my students to relate to. They see the stories inside of them as childish and unrealistic during this time. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but the majority of them come from low-income families. Because of this while they are in class they aren't worried about what they are going to get on their test. They are worried about how their parents/guardians are going to afford their next meal. Or the new shoes they need. I have noticed that when we study a chapter book together as a class I can keep my students engaged and motivated more.

I think it is because some of the stories we read are either about kids their own age dealing with problems and finding positive ways to handle those problems.

Or they are a fantasy that can transport them to another world for the 30 minutes we are reading it in class. They can be off fighting dragons instead of worrying about what they heard on the news about COVID-19 or other stressful aspects going on in their lives.

By providing my class with these new books, I can help my students not only in their academics but I can help them escape their reality for a little while, and lift a little bit of that burden off of their shoulders.
