Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Although they come from a community with high-poverty, my 6-year-old scholars come to school every day with great enthusiasm and a big dream to go to college! Most of my students come from working families and some come from single-parent families. Most of their parents' highest educational level is high school, and most do not speak English. Therefore, many of my students lack the academic support at home. Despite facing the challenge of being English Language Learners (and for a fourth of my students, being students with special needs), my little first graders have the best attitude about school! I am so blessed with such sweet and motivated first graders!
My Project
In my classroom, I always try to incorporate various learning strategies to meet the needs of the different types of learners. Little first graders can be very distracted at times. However, I have discovered that they are more engaged in learning when it comes to…music! We do sing and dance a lot in my classroom. However, I feel that adding more music cues or songs from the speaker system will heighten the level of engagement from those six-year-olds.
Music will definitely speed up our classroom routines and collaborations but in a more exciting way!
I will use the portable speaker to project music cues for my students to perform their daily tasks in a timely manner. This especially helps some of my students with special needs. Once familiarized with the music cues, my students will know for examples when to line up or organize their things away. I also use music to engage them in their collaborative work, for examples when they are sharing ideas with partners or working on a team project. Besides using the speaker in my classroom, I also plan to bring it outside for our Physical Education time. Imagine this, students competing in healthy, active games or sports while listening to motivating songs in the background; or…they are relaxing on the grass, engaging in some mindfulness breathing exercises as their ears follow peaceful sounds from the speaker. How fun is that?! This speaker will support my students’ growth in academics, physical, and social areas.
