Although they come from a community with high-poverty and gang association, my 6-year-old kiddos come to school every day with great enthusiasm and a big dream to go to college. They come from working families and some also come from single-parent families. Most of their parents' highest educational level is high school. Therefore, many of my students lack the academic support at home. Many of them have not had any preschool experience, so 1st grade is only their second year of school. About 97% of my students are English-language learners, with their native language being Spanish. Learning a second language is hard enough, let only reading and writing in that second language and to be proficient by the national standards. Despite these difficulties, my little first graders have the best attitude about school. I have to say that I am blessed with such sweet and motivated 1st graders.
