Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 28 third grade students are an eager bunch of children who enjoy being engaged and learning. They come from diverse and humble backgrounds. Many of them receive free or reduced school lunch. Some of my students are new the country and speak no English. Having been home for much of their previous schooling due to the Covid-19, many of my students are far behind where they need to be academically.

Third grade is such an exciting yet pivotal year.

My 29 students are making the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. They are eagerly embracing the rigor of third grade while preparing for the upcoming New York State Tests. My students are engaged in many tasks throughout the morning, from centers, to computers, to small group work with me.

It's important that they have interesting materials and academic games to motivate them.

My Project

Children learn best when they are actively engaged and utilize various modailities. When they physically construct words with puzzles and games, they are better able to retain what they learn. This is why I am hoping to buy phonics puzzles and games to be utilized during centers.

Phonics games and puzzles will motivate my students to learn and tap into their kinesthetic learning.

While I work with small groups, students have their choice of activities. I will use the phonics puzzles and games during this time so that students can reinforce the skills they learn with me in small groups. These games will also help my ESL population gain valuable skills and exposure to the way words work in English.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
