Encourage Mathematical And Technological Literacy

My students need 20 scientific calculators.

Imagine a classroom where some kids have calculators while others don't. It isn't fair, is it? Yet that is the situation that I face each day. I teach Algebra and Advanced Algebra to 9th-12th grade students in Arizona who range in background from wealthy white students to poor Navajo students who have to travel 90 minutes one way to get to school each day. Our school is considered to be a "wealthy" school because of its location. However, nothing could be farther from the truth. While many students do come from upper middle class to wealthy families, a significant portion of our students come from the Navajo reservation, families where one or more parents are in college, newly immigrated families to the US, and neglectful parents. Most of our poorer students' families struggle to make ends meet: they are faced with a choice between feeding their family or purchasing school supplies. This is an opportunity for us as a community to help level the playing field for these students by providing them access to some technology for use in their studies. For most of these students, the use of a calculator can help students better comprehend and apply difficult math subjects (see Swingle, David A. and Lynne M. Pachnowski. 2003. “Filling in the Gaps: Modeling Incomplete CBL Data Using a Graphing Calculator.”). Moreover, the use of a calculator can help many of these students overcome their anxieties about math and achieve more. Studies have shown that students who have access to calculators are more likely to take higher level math classes and exhibit an interest in mathematics. (Ferrucci, Beverly J. and Jack A. Carter. 2003. “Technology-active Mathematical Modeling.” and Hennessy, Sara, Pat Fung, and Eileen Scanlon. 2001. “The Role of the Graphic Calculator in Mediating Graphing Activity.”) The more math that students can complete in secondary school, the better prepared students are to meet the demands of college and an increasingly more competitive workforce. The purchase of 20 scientific calculators is a powerful step towards mathematically empowering students. These calculators are able to do all of the calculations that are necessary for the study of advanced algebraic concepts such as trigonometry and logarithms. They can also help students conduct basic statistical analysis. With additional calculators, students would no longer have to borrow calculators from a friend. Moreover, they would become familiar with calculator technology and would be prepared to use it outside of school. Without daily access to calculator technology, these students will be woefully under-prepared for daily life outside of a school where calculators are omnipresent. Few of these students have an opportunity to use a calculator in their daily life. But your donation can change this: every student in my Algebra class could use a calculator to solve a problem involving rocketry, or fit a line to data collected from classmates, or any number of other real-life applications of mathematics. Few technologies have the impact that calculators do on a student's ability to comprehend and apply mathematical concepts. Calculators are inexpensive, yet powerful and incredibly useful tools. By helping us to buy calculators for my students, you will help each of them become more successful not only in math, but in the basic technologies that most of us take for granted.
