Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students at AHS inspire me on a daily basis. They come from a variety of backgrounds, but the one thing they share is the motivation and desire to learn. Many of my students struggle just to make it to school on a daily basis, but they never let their circumstances define who they are or what they are capable of.
Every day in the classroom, we explore issues of culture, race, gender, and empowerment.
Seeing these students engage with a topic and connect it to their own lives and in a bigger context to the world they live in is one of the highlights of my job.
My goal as an English teacher is to use literature to expand my students' horizons and to show them how they are connected to people all over the world through their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. These global connections in turn make them citizens of the world who leave my classroom having earned that distinction.
My Project
The Book of Unknown Americans is an inspiring novel about the lives of immigrants. It will connect my students to immigrants from all over Latin America. The experiences of these characters will resonate with my classes as they learn about the struggles and successes involved with becoming an "American."
In today's world, it is worthwhile for students to learn about the immigrants who come to this country for a better life.
Their hopes and dreams for themselves and their families are no different from what we all want in life.
As many of my students are immigrants themselves or have family members who have immigrated to this country, I want them to see this experience reflected in the literature they read in my class. My school does not have the funds to update our literary resources or to buy current books.
