My students are proud members of the Sicangu Rosebud tribe. My students often do not understand the links between things such as writing and reading, or writing and science. It is difficult to have students who are wanting to learn and yet some of the resources are not there.
I have the usual eclectic bunch of students, however the problem is that many of them do not think that they will ever leave the reservation.
One of the side perks of this job is that I get to teach them to dream. Their writing shows that they have dreams and that some of them will be able to reach these dreams with a good education and a little bit of hard work.
My Project
My students need thread, needles, and beads so that they we can continue Empowering Students Through Art. My students are proud members of the Sicangu Oyate Lakota. We live on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. Because we are a BIE funded school, we receive almost half the amount of that of a public school. My students need these supplies so that I can continue to teach them about their culture by Empowering Students Through Art. Our kids often do not have access to the kinds of supplies that are prevalent in more affluent areas.
My students get to my classes not knowing how to make some of the basic Lakota Arts.
This project will allow them to practice art and learn about their culture. My students often, do not have access to the kinds of technology that are prevalent in more other areas. I want to empower them to be proud Lakota boys and girls by empowering them through art.
The requested art supplies and paints will enable my students to create dream catchers, murals, and self identify with art. These are all basic supplies that my students needs in order to enable them a chance to understand who they are.
