Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project seeks to integrate iPads into a community-based life skills classroom in order to increase student independence, engagement, and real-world skill development. Students in this program have significant support needs and are working toward increased independence in daily living skills, communication, and community participation. The iPads will serve as a versatile, accessible tool to bridge classroom instruction with authentic, real-world experiences.

In the community, the iPads will be used to support navigation, communication, task completion, and decision-making.

In addition, they will assist students to learn appropriate community behavior. Students will be able to access visual schedules, step-by-step instructions, and video modeling to complete activities such as grocery shopping, using public transportation, ordering food, and managing personal responsibilities. The devices will allow instruction to be individualized to meet diverse learning needs.

Additionally, the iPads will enable students to practice functional academics including budgeting, price comparison, and time management. The use of real-time supports will help to reduce reliance on adult prompting and promote greater independence. Staff will also be able to collect data, monitor progress, and adjust instruction based on student performance in natural environments. This immediate feedback would ensure that learning is meaningful, measurable, and transferable beyond the classroom.

By integrating iPads into community-based instruction, this project will provide students with the tools they need to navigate everyday situations, build confidence, and develop lifelong skills essential for independent living and successful community participation.
