Empowering Communication Through Assistive Technology

My Project

In our classroom, many students are diagnosed with communication challenges, including autism and other developmental disabilities, which impact their ability to use verbal language effectively. Without appropriate communication tools, students may struggle to participate in learning, engage socially, and express their needs, often leading to frustration or behavioral challenges.

This project aims to provide students in my classroom who have complex communication needs access to assistive technology, including talking applications on IPAD devices.

These tools will support students in developing communication skills by enabling them to learn how to express wants, needs, thoughts, and academic responses using words and phrases taught to them through specially designed instruction in the special education setting. Having access and modeling to communication tools will allow students to build expressive and receptive language skills in meaningful, functional ways.

By integrating augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) into daily instruction, students will gain greater independence, confidence, and access to the curriculum which will ensure equitable access for all learners.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
