Empathy Training Helps Stop Bullying

My students need a copy of "Bullying in Schools" and poetry books from multiple perspectives. They also need materials, like glue, construction paper and markers, to make anti-bullying posters to hang around our school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine the halls of our school decorated with inspirational quotes and multicultural images that demonstrate friendship, compassion, and citizenship. Now think of the learning potential and ownership possible in the students creating these visual masterpieces themselves.

Our students maintain positive attitudes about their futures despite the cultures of poverty and violence that surround them.

Their needs are varied and intense, and despite the curricular demands, each student wants to be seen, heard, and validated. We are all painfully aware of the torment some students face and the horrifying potential consequences of unreported consistent bullying. My students want to make connections between what they see in the media and the information they are required to know for school.

My Project

These materials will provide my students an opportunity for a multi-leveled unit on Bullying. The "Bullying in Schools" resource will begin the unit, providing a week of structured dialog, writing activities, and self-evaluation. The students will spend the next week cruising through poetry and other inspirational material, searching for meaningful quotes. They will keep an ongoing section in their notes for easy reference and take time to share with their peers to keep the positivity building. Then, students will work in small groups to create one large poster that celebrates one of the fantastic quotes they have found.

The creation of a "Safe Zone" in my classroom is my first priority as a new school year begins.

But the structure of this unit adds both intention and extension to the plans I usually follow. The possibility of spreading the "Safe Zone" around the school and creating the desire in students to help each other thrills me.
