Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is comprised of twenty curious first graders who all speak Spanish as a primary language in the home. As part of a primary language classroom, language arts instruction occurs in Spanish. Spanish language children's literature can be costly and difficult to procure.
All of my students speak English as a second language, and the majority of them qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My students love to read, and they are well on their way to becoming proficient writers as well. They are an energetic and curious bunch who love to learn!
My Project
Learning to read is a fundamental part of the first grade language arts curriculum. From interactive read-alouds to independent reading time, students will benefit greatly from the Spanish language children's literature that I hope to provide for them.
My students love listening to engaging read-alouds, and by listening to high quality children's literature they develop reading comprehension skills.
The students will also have access to the books as part of a classroom library. Whether enjoying the books as part of a whole class activity or reading them during independent reading time, having access to these books is sure to instill a love of literacy in my first graders!
