Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school located in the state of Utah. Approximately 85% of our students receive free lunch at the school because their families come from a very low socioeconomic background. Our students come to our school every day to feel safe and have a great experience while learning throughout the day.

We feel that providing our students with different learning environments and opportunities will help them feel confident in knowing that they are in charge of their own higher education no matter where they come from!

The COVID crisis has made educational advances extremely difficult for our students over the past two school years. Multiple teachers have left the program and classroom time has been limited.

My Project

My 2nd grade students learn in a Spanish speaking Dual Immersion environment where half of the instruction is in English and the other half is in Spanish. Some of our students have opted into our program instead of attending other elementary schools in the district to assist with reading, speaking, and writing skills in both languages.

I have requested books, some are in English and some are in Spanish.

The library at our school is extremely limited in quality picture books for English language learner (ELL) students who need multiple opportunities to practice reading in both languages.
