Elementary students are at the perfect age to learn how to use new technology to their advantage! Their natural inquisitiveness and curiosity draw them to learn like engineers. They imagine, plan, test, and watch enthralled as their creation takes action. The engineering design process has been a natural instinct and as a STEM teacher, I foster this process as we use and develop the technology.
Our elementary students are ready to take their coding skills to the next level- coding drones in the sky!
I can't wait to see our 4th and 5th graders expand their skills and learn to code drones. They'll be gaining valuable experience as they practice computer programming skills, but also trying out an exciting 21st-century career.
My Project
STEM education is at the forefront of our students' world. Everywhere we look we see the fruits of the world of STEM. As a STEM Specials Teacher, one of my main jobs is to teach coding skills to all elementary students. Working sequentially, thinking of cause and effect, planning ahead, testing and revising... these are invaluable skills for our next generation of students. Starting their coding journey now leads them to a very bright future! What better way to enhance their coding experience than with DRONES?!
Drone technology is not only the wave of the future, but it will also provide our 4th and 5th graders with the opportunity to problem-solve and practice coding skills with real-world applications.
The Tello drones operate either remotely or by code. Each drone contains its own wifi signal with Bluetooth technology allowing multiple drones to operate in the same area without interference. Our students have extensive screen coding experience and have expertly coded Dash robots, but now they'll be able to take their coding skills to the air! Excitement and enthusiasm for coding, and the STEM skills needed for the future, will be as sure as the whirring sound filling the air!
